Portland Firefighters on Film, 1912 and 1963
Join us for a screening of two incredible films that document Portland firefighting history
The first, The Portland Fire Department in Action 1912, documents firefighters leading horse drawn fire engines as they enter and leave various fire houses around the city. The horses, equipment, firefighters, and brief glimpses into Portland streets are stunning.

The second film, 24 Hours, jumps forward fifty years and documents a day in the life of the Portland Fire Department, circa 1963, including the beginning of the city firefighters’ shift, their daily routines of cleaning, maintaining the apparatus, training, and, of course, responding to emergencies. These films offer a rich visual record of Portland, and honor firefighters past and present.
This event is free and open to the public.
